Most everyone will agree that ceiling fans, in general, are an inexpensive and efficient way to keep your home comfortable. However, by using Energy Star ceiling fans, you can increase that efficiency up to 50%. They come in many styles and finishes to compliment all decors and can be used in just about any room, including bathrooms. There’s more to choosing the right ceiling fan than just looking for an Energy Star logo and the desired aesthetics. The proper size and set up makes all the difference both in comfort and efficiency.
Ceiling fans come in several different sizes. Generally speaking, the larger the room, the larger the ceiling fan you’ll need in order to accommodate that room. Very small rooms with a square footage of 75 feet or less need only fans that are between 29 and 36 inches in size. A 36 to 42 inch ceiling fan is optimal for a medium sized room that’s between 76 and 144 square feet. Large rooms that are 144 to 225 square feet should utilize a 44 inch fan. The 50-54 inch sizes work best for extra large rooms that are 255-400 square feet.
Optimally, a ceiling fan should be placed in the middle of the room and should hang so that’s its no more than 8 ro 9 feet above the floor. Therefore, the next important consideration to be made when choosing a ceiling fan is the mounting system. Most fans come with a standard mount. This is a metal pipe, also called a downrod, which is 1/2 or 3/4 inches in diameter and 3-5 inches long. It goes between the top of the fan and the ceiling bracket. If the room has a ceiling that’s 8 feet or less, the fan can usually be installed using a flush mount. This means there is no downrod and the fan is mounted directly against the ceiling. Many companies sell “low profile” and “hugger” fans just for rooms with low ceilings. Rooms with high ceilings will require the use of an extended mount. they range from 6 inches all the way up to 120 inches. Ask the sales associate or check the manufacturer’s guidelines for the right length for you Energy Star ceiling fan.
Blades also have an impact on performance. The wrong size, weight and even angle can affect air circulation and cause the fan to wobble. For this reason, always use the blades that come with the set. Make sure that the blades are properly sealed from moisture as well. If they’re blistered, peeling, etc., the Energy Star ceiling fan won’t work as well.
There are a few more features to check for when purchasing a good fan. Motor grades should be high quality for continuous operation. All Energy Star ceiling fans come with the ability to operate in reverse. This is great when you need to change the direction of the airflow in order to maintain comfort.
Energy Star ceiling fans are an excellent investment for any room in any home. They can keep you comfortable all year long and for much less. No matter what size or style you ultimately choose, an Energy Star ceiling fan is the way to go.
